Coventry LPC and Warwickshire LPC are holding a Mental Health Training Event
on Wednesday 3rd April 2019 at the Citrus Hotel, Coventry, CV8 3DY
The purpose of the event:
- to provide an update on mental health conditions
- identify links with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and physical Health
- to support a forthcoming pilot in Leamington, Nuneaton & Bedworth, Rugby and Coventry – where participating pharmacies can offer a funded brief healthy lifestyle intervention and referral to GP for a full health check.
Background: People with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) die up to 20 years younger than the general population and their risk for long term conditions is significantly increased which can be prevented or impact reduced by health interventions and / or early diagnosis. There are concerns about poor access to services and high DNA rates. Additionally, the hospital admission rate for mental and physical health related issues is high amongst this cohort of patients as well as the call upon GP time. The proactive approach to improve physical health for patients with SMI can be complemented by provision through Community Pharmacy in order to meet the NHSE goal of 60% receiving a Health Intervention and by opportunistic approach alongside appointments to counteract the current high DNA rates (>50%).
